Teacher Arrested On Suspicion Of Possessing Pot, Gun

UPDATED: 9:13 am CDT May 16, 2008

Parents in Guadalupe County are livid after a fourth-grade teacher was arrested after deputies found marijuana and a loaded handgun in a car on campus.

Tanya Boyd, 46, was arrested by sheriff's deputies after a drug-sniffing dog alerted deputies to the drugs in her vehicle. After a search, deputies also found the gun.

Deputies said the investigation began after they were tipped off Boyd was smoking marijuana in the parking lot during her breaks.

Boyd has worked for the Navarro Independent School District since 2005 and was well liked by her students, Superintendent Dee Carter said.

"Was there anything we missed or have we overlooked anything with our security policies? I don't believe that's the case," Carter said.

Boyd is currently on paid leave from the district, pending a more permanent solution from district officials, Carter said.
