SAN ANTONIO -- A number of South Texas community groups came together Friday to protest alleged sexual abuse at a privately run detention facility.
Members of Fuerza Unida, the Brown Berets and the Cesar Chavez Young Ambassadors were among the groups at Friday's meeting downtown, all in an effort to raise attention to abuse allegations at the GEO Groups Detention Center in
Pearsall, Texas.
The facility houses immigrant detainees, and some have alleged that guards are making promises to female detainees for sexual favors. That is a practice the groups said was going unchecked because the detention facility isn't state run.
"...The people who would be the potential witnesses can be deported before anybody can ask for any accountability," said Gabriel Velasquez, vice president of the Cesar Chavez Foundation.
Velasquez said the groups are planning a fact-finding mission to Pearsall in hopes of speaking with the warden about the allegations.
