Student Killed In Train Crash Mourned

Garcia Was Honors Student At Southwest High School

Samantha Morquecho and Breana Garza were looking forward to celebrating graduation from Southwest High School with their fellow classmate and best friend, Sophia Garcia.

Morquecho and Garcia were excited about the chance of sharing a dormitory at the University of Texas at Austin.

"She wanted to decorate the dorm like Texas," Morquecho said. "She loved Texas."

But those plans came to an end Sunday. Garcia, 18, was killed when her car was hit by a train at Macdona-Lacoste and Pure roads in southwest Bexar County.

It's not clear how the collision happened and an investigation is ongoing.

"She was one of a kind," Garza said.

Garcia's best friends often ask why the crash occurred. After all, they said that Garcia did everything right. She was an accomplished student, ranked fourth in her class and was a member of the National Honor Society. Garcia had planned on becoming a physical therapist.

Despite Garcia's death, Morquecho said that she still plans to attend UT. After all, that's what her friend would have wanted.

"I just want to go off to college because I know she would want me to go," she said. "Do good. Always make her proud."

A funeral Mass for Garcia will be celebrated Friday.
