SAN ANTONIO -- A camera that normally catches traffic violators may help Balcones Heights police solve a fatal shooting.
Just before sundown Monday, someone walked up to a green Mercedes at the intersection of Fredericksburg Road and Crossroads Boulevard and opened fire.
The passenger in the car, 27-year-old Rose Anna Martinez, was killed. The driver, Jose Alberto Lozano, 46, was wounded.
Police Chief Bill Stannard said that Lozano, who was the target of the shooting, admitted to detectives that he used to belong to a gang but has been of little help in identifying the shooter.
"He could not see because the window was broken," Stannard said. "But he did see the shooter run and get into a car."
Stannard hopes that since it was still daylight when the shooting happened, that the red-light camera caught the shooter and his getaway vehicle.
"We're keeping our fingers crossed," Stannard said.
He should know if his detectives caught a break Tuesday afternoon.
