SAN ANTONIO -- A program police have said works for the city is now being integrated into local high schools.
San Antonio Independent School District officials announced Tuesday their intention to begin Campus Crime Stoppers, a program modeled after the San Antonio Crime Stoppers initiative that began in 1982.
The program will offer incentives to students to anonymously report others possibly involved in criminal activities, including cash rewards.
"I certainly don't want weapons in school, don't want drugs in schools, don't want kids graffiting classrooms, hallways and stuff like that, because that costs the school district money," interim SAISD Police Chief Jeff Ward said.
The district used a poster contest to begin introducing the programs to students.
"Now that there's a line you can call, you won't get chased after or in trouble, and you won't get involved with that person," student Karen Ruiz said. "The school will be safe and you will be safe."
Ruiz created the winning poster design for the program. Those posters will line the halls of all SAISD campuses next school year, according to district officials.
"Once the students get used to it and it becomes part of the culture, they'll learn that the advantages of using Crime Stoppers and how it keeps their school safe ... it's saving lives and keeps people from harm," SAISD Superintendent Robert Duron said.
The number for the tip line is (210) 227-8477. The line will be monitored 24 hours a day, according to district officials, who also said an online tip submission form will be created.
