SAN ANTONIO -- A Bexar County disaster declaration that began Tuesday morning will expire too soon to make a significant dent in enforcing a fireworks ban unless Governor Rick Perry steps in to extend the timeframe to after the July 4 holiday, county officials said.
Currently, the county can only enforce the ban for 60 hours from its beginning just after midnight Tuesday, county officials said. The ban was enacted after firefighters said they were stretched during the New Year's holiday and county officials took into account the area's recent drought conditions. County leaders, including those in Medina and Comal counties, are also hoping for the governor's extension to extend the usage ban.
Currently, there is a ban on all fireworks detonation unless within the 10 safe zones established by the county with help from fireworks vendors. Those 10 safe zones will not be open until July 3.
County officials reminded residents that it's not only illegal to detonate fireworks within the city limits, but also illegal to bring them into the city. A hot line has been established for people to report fireworks usage within city limits. People who wish to report the usage are asked to call 210-207-0202.
