SAN ANTONIO -- The first of many planned meetings between local and federal government officials, developers and the military about development near military installations took place Tuesday afternoon at City Hall.
The Camp Bullis Joint Land Use Study Committee was introduced to a consultant who will conduct a nine-month study of the land surrounding Camp Bullis on the city's northwest side.
City officials said they'd like to establish a three-mile buffer zone around the camp and set aside another 62 acres of undeveloped land near the base. Military and government officials said development around the area is forcing an endangered species to move onto the base and light pollution from the current development is placing their training missions in jeopardy.
"We will make sure that Camp Bullis is protected in the city of San Antonio," District 8 City Councilwoman Diane Cibrian said. "In relation to encroachment, we will protect the military interests of Camp Bullis (and) we protect the city's security and the national security in relation to the encroachment of Camp Bullis."
The developer of the land has temporarily halted production, but they said they can't wait nine months for the completion of the study and would like the city to provide guidance so they can move forward.
