SAN ANTONIO -- A court order is being proposed that would affect residents and businesses located around Camp Bullis on the city's northwest side.
County leaders and military officials said lights from the surrounding areas are affecting its nighttime training missions. County Commissioner Lyle Larson said the county needs to find a way to regulate the type of lighting used on future developments in order to help Camp Bullis during those training missions.
"When they see the lights from not only residential, but commercial, it creates this glare and it presents a public safety issue with them and with folks on the ground," Larson said.
The trainings usually take place between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m., said military officials.
The county engineer said lights around the area either need to be turned off or replaced. The court order being proposed would regulate outdoor lighting in future developments around the base.
"It's just a matter of controlling how they're illuminated in the development stage," said County Engineer Renee Green.
Changes to existing light fixtures can't be forced, but county officials said they're expecting voluntary compliance.
A public hearing on the matter is tentatively scheduled for June 22 before commissioners can pass the court order.
