SA Nun Chosen To Lead Order
A ceremony was held Sunday at the Chapel of the Incarnate Word for a local nun who was named congregational coordinator of the largest Catholic Order in Texas.
Sister Yolanda Tarango will lead the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, a congregation that includes more than 400 international members stationed in Latin America, Africa and Ireland.
"The most important aspect of the congregation is their service to the people and especially the poor," Tarango said.
The Order came to San Antonio, where they founded CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital and the University of the Incarnate Word.
Tarango has also aided in founding institutions for the Alamo city, including co-founding The Visitation House, a transitional home for homeless women and children.
The new congregational coordinator views her position as an opportunity to encourage women to become nuns or members of religious communities.
"I think people have the impression that we're all aging and dying, when in fact women are joining and religious life is still very vibrant in the United States," said Tarango.
Tarango called the ceremony an unbelievable honor and hopes to see the congregation grow during her time as coordinator.
