SAHA Offering Lessees Partial Buyback For Mirasol Homes

Some lessees and renters in the city's Mirasol Homes subdivision said they feel left out after the city's housing authority raised its buyback rate for homeowners.

After admitting numerous cases of mold and poor construction in the homes, the San Antonio Housing Authority offered to buy back some of the homes in the area, and recently increased its offer to at least $30,000 per homeowner. The problem, said some lessees and renters, is the authority's unwillingness to offer the same amounts for those who didn't own their homes.

"I have as much years as the homeowners, and I have dealt with a lot of stuff, more than the homeowners, so I feel I'm being discriminated completely," lessee Missy Smith said.

SAHA officials said they are offering a similar program for people on the lease-to-own program, but not the same as the program for homeowners because they don't yet own the homes.

Lessees are eligible to use their funds, called an accumulated credit account, toward the purchase of any home of their choosing, SAHA officials said. The amount is about 60 percent of what they paid on their lease, officials said.
