Emilio's Brother Says Singer, Wife OK Following Crash

The brother of Tejano singer Emilio Navaira said Thursday that his brother is lucky to have survived two crashes this year.

"Emilio is here for a reason," said Raul Navaira, Emilio's brother and fellow band member.

The singer and his wife, Maria, were injured in a traffic crash late Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of Culebra and Potranco roads on the city's far northwest side.

Raul Navaira said that his sister-in-law was driving Emilio to the doctor when a pickup suddently turned in front of the Navaira vehicle.

Emilio and his wife were taken to University Hospital in stable condition and were kept overnight for observation.

"They were scared, but the docs said everything looks all right," Raul Navaira said.

Navaira and his bandmates were involved in an Easter Sunday bus crash near Houston. Navaira, who was driving the bus, was thrown through the windshield and spent several days on life support before recovering enough to be moved to a rehabilitation hospital. Several of his bandmates, including his brother, were also injured in the wreck.

Navaira had a blood-alcohol level of 0.19, more than twice the legal limit, according to a report in the Houston Chronicle in May.

Navaira won't be charged until his mental status is determined, a police report stated.

The singer recently returned to San Antonio when the hospital he was staying at was evacuated due to Hurricane Ike.

Raul Navaira said the year has been tough for his brother, but it could be worse.

"There's other people (who) have it rough," he said. "People (who) have family overseas (who) lost kids. That's much worse than what we've been through."
