SAN ANTONIO -- A woman on trial for shaking a baby under her care caused a significant head injury and severe injury to the child's brain, said a pediatric neurosurgeon who testified Wednesday.
Artizaid Santiago is facing injury to a child charges for allegedly shaking then 5-month-old Nathan Bonano in April 2006. Bonano's parents left their son in Santiago's care, but found the baby listless, vomiting and unresponsive when he was picked up from Santiago's home.
Gloria Gennuso testified Bonano suffered from injuries consistent with that of shaken baby syndrome, including retinal hemmoraging.
Bonano's parents have previously said that while their son has recovered from his injuries, he is experiencing developmental delays.
Defense attorneys are expected to present their own medical experts on Thursday.
