SAN ANTONIO -- Jurors were deliberating the fate Friday of a 39-year-old woman accused of shaking and injuring a 5-month-old child she was caring for.
During closing arguments prosecutors told jurors that Aritzaid Santiago was responsible for the brain injury suffered by Nathan Bonano in April 2006.
Prosecutors contend that the emergency brain surgery that Nathan underwent was a result of injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome.
In addition, prosecutors pointed out that Santiago admitted to police that she gently shook the infant and therefore should be found guilty of injury to a child.
But defense attorney Jay Norton said that Santiago didn't intentionally hurt the infant.
"She never picked up the child and shook him so violently and said, 'I am fed up with you,'" Norton said. "That never happened."
Jurors began deliberating at 11 a.m.
If Santiago is found guilty, she could be sentenced to a minimum of probation to a maximum of life in prison.
