SAN ANTONIO -- A baby sitter on trial for shaking a baby hard enough to cause developmental damage was found guilty Friday by a Bexar County jury.
Aritzaid Santiago was found guilty for shaking then 5-month-old Nathan Bonano in 2006. The punishment phase of her trial is expected to begin Monday. Santiago faces from five to 99 years in prison or a life sentence, but is eligible for probation.
During closing arguments, prosecutors showed a video of Santiago admitting to investigators she shook Bonano, but said she did not mean to cause harm to the child.
During the trial, multiple doctors testified Bonano's injuries were consistent with Shaken Baby Syndrome. Bonano survived his injuries, but his parents have previously said he suffers from various developmental delays.
Santiago showed no reaction as the verdict was read. During closing arguments, prosecutors said her lack of reaction throughout the case was because of her own awareness of guilt.
