SAN ANTONIO -- A jury on Tuesday decided that a 39-year-old woman should spend five years in prison for shaking an infant she was baby-sitting.
Jurors deliberated for 12½ hours before rendering punishment for Aritzaid Santiago, who was found guilty Friday of injury to a child.
Santiago was eligible for probation and could have been sentenced to a maximum of life in prison.
"For us, it's just a day that our son got justice and she got punishment that the jury thinks she deserved," said Carlos Bonano, the father of Nathan Bonano, who was 5-months old when he was injured in 2006 in Santiago's care.
Brenda Bonano, the infant's mother, told KSAT 12 News that she'll feel better the day Santiago says that she's sorry for hurting Nathan.
While doctors testified that Nathan's injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome, Santiago denied hurting him.
Santiago must serve half of the sentence before she's eligible for parole.
