SAN ANTONIO -- A female friend of a fatal shooting victim testified Friday at the trial of the accused killer, who is also her friend.
Janice Gonzalez told jurors in the trial of Ian Van Buren that she was at a poker party on Oct. 31, 2006, at the home of Jeremy Lathan, the victim.
Gonzalez said that she then invited Van Buren to join the party.
When Van Buren arrived drunk at the party, Gonzalez said she asked him to leave. Van Buren then poured beer on her, Gonzalez testified.
"He just kind of leaned over and poured it all over my head," she said. "And it took a few seconds, because there was a lot in that container."
Gonzalez said Lathan got a baseball bat and followed Van Buren to his sport utility vehicle and smashed the vehicle with the bat.
She testified that she heard gunshots and saw Lathan stagger away and collapse.
Van Buren claims the shooting was in self-defense. He's expected to testify next week.
