SAN ANTONIO -- So far in Bexar County this year, more than 10,000 homes have gone into mortgage foreclosure, an amount that is well on its way to breaking records.
Compared to this time last year, when there were about 8,400 homes in foreclosure, the number this year is poised to top 12,000 homes, which is a 23 percent increase from 2007, according to city officials.
As families lose their homes, though, one city official said his department is not seeing a corresponding increase in people seeking assistance.
"I think the biggest disconnect is people are in denial," said Dennis Campa, director of the city's Community Initiatives department. "We're saying, 'Please work with us, we want you to stay in your home.'"
Homeowners facing foreclosure can contact the city's Community Initiatives department at 210-207-5910 for more information on assistance programs.
