SAN ANTONIO -- A police officer in southeast Bexar County was attacked by a man after the officer tried to give him a code violation warning, investigators said.
The China Grove police officer was patrolling a neighborhood when he noticed an 18-wheeler parked in a yard, said investigators. When the officer attemped to talk to William Whitman, the truck's owner, Whitman took off running. The officer tackled and wrestled the man before locking him into a bear hug while he called for help.
"The suspect was trying to take the officer's gun out of his holster," said Bexar County sheriff's Deputy Ino Badillo. "The officer feared for his life until other officers got here and took the man into custody."
Whitman was charged with attempting to take a gun from an officer, evading, resisting arrest and assault on a police officer.
