SAN ANTONIO -

A 17-year-old girl is in critical condition Wednesday night after she was hit by a car on the city's Northeast Side.

The accident happened in front of Roosevelt High School on Walzem Road just after 5:30 p.m.

According to police, the girl was trying to cross the three eastbound lanes while traffic was backed up at a stoplight when she slipped.

Police say a woman in her 80s was driving in the right-hand lane when she hit the girl. 

The victim suffered severe head injuries. Multiple witnesses stopped to help the teen.

The teen was transported to San Antonio Medical Military Center with life-threatening injuries.

Police say the teen was not using the crosswalk.
