18 homes in Denver Heights neighborhood to get makeovers

Volunteers to fix homes at Rehabarama event Saturday

SAN ANTONIO – Denver Heights resident Javier Martinez is getting his home, which was built in the 1900's, repaired as part of a new city event.

"When this happened, I said, I am so grateful. It's finally going to happen," Martinez said.

The Office of Historic Preservation is hosting the first Rehabarama event Saturday to help low- and moderate-income households.

Homes located in the 100 and 200 blocks of Harding Place will be renovated.

Dozens of volunteers, local contractors, students and neighborhood leaders will donate their time to improve the homes.

Supplies will be donated by various sponsors.

"We're not going to be able to do everything some of these homes may need in a single day, but it certainly gives homeowners a jump start in what is needed," said OHP director Shanon Miller.

OHP will host a Preservation Month Block Party at 6 p.m. Saturday at Pittman-Sullivan Park. The event will include music, food, an antique car show and a screening of Disney's "Cars."
