SAN ANTONIO -

A total of 18 apartment units were damaged and several residents displaced after a 2-alarm fire ripped through a South Side apartment complex Friday morning.

25 San Antonio fire department units responded to the blaze an apartment complex on Camino De Oro near Somerset Road and Southwest Military Drive.

The fire broke out just after 2 a.m. and was so large, crews could see the flames from a block away as they arrived on the scene.

"We had smoke all in the room, so we woke all the kids up and got out," Frances Reyes said. Reyes said she left with her kids so fast, there wasn't even time to get shoes for her daughters.

"I was scared, because I had all my kids with me. I have a three month old, and we were just trying to get out," Reyes said.

Fire officials said there was heavy fire damage in six apartments, and all other units in Building 7 had fire, smoke or water damage.

"Firefighters did an extremely good job. They made a good stop, were able to quickly evacuate the building where we could get master streams on it and extinguish the fire before it progressed through all three floors," said Batallion Chief Brian Lee with the San Antonio Fire Department.

The arson unit is investigating the cause of the fire, but it was not considered to be suspicious.

Fire officials said all residents evacuated the building safely and those displaced were being assisted by the Red Cross.
