SAN ANTONIO -- Five people who officials said were involved in a massive organized drug operation in San Antonio were arraigned on federal drug charges Wednesday following a drug bust that netted 7,700 pounds of marijuana and 340 pounds of cocaine.
The massive amount of drugs were seized Tuesday night during a series of traffic stops and a high-speed police chase.
"It's very significant when you take out that amount of marijuana," said Thomas Hinojosa of the Drug Enforcement Agency.
Thomas Hinojosa of the Drug Enforcement Agency said that the drugs were smuggled in from Mexico through the Laredo area to be repackaged and distributed in San Antonio to cities across the country.
"Obviously, it's going to cut down on somebody's supply to distribute elsewhere on the streets," Hinojosa said. "We hope we made a significant impact on their ability to do that."
Hinojosa said that a six-month long investigation paid off Tuesday night when law enforcement officials pulled over a pickup truck that led them on a high-speed chase on Interstate 37. Police found the cocaine in the vehicle.
An 18-wheeler and another vehicle were pulled over at Interstate 37 and Mathis Road, Hinojosa said.
Police were then led to a ranch on the city's south side, where the huge load of marijuana was seized, Hinojosa said.
More arrests are expected in the case, Hinojosa said.
