Car Driven By Woman In Labor Crashes Into Building

Woman Listed In Stable Condition

POSTED: 1:12 p.m. CST December 3, 2002

An 8½ month pregnant woman who was in labor crashed her car into a building on the city's Northwest Side as she rushed herself to a hospital Tuesday morning.

Witnesses said the woman and her boyfriend were traveling north on Babcock Road at 9 a.m. when they experienced brake problems.

In an effort to stop the car, the couple decided to veer off the road and crashed into a building at 1955 Babcock Road.

"They were basically trying to come into a parking lot so they could slow their progress and hit (a) telephone pole," said Ed Villanueva, who witnessed the accident. "They meant to hit the telephone pole. The passenger pulled on the steering wheel. And as he did that, he overshot the telephone pole and hit the building instead."

Villanueva said the car narrowly missed going into a culvert that's next to the building.

The woman was rushed to University Hospital where she is listed in stable condition in the labor and delivery unit.

The boyfriend was not hurt.
