SAN ANTONIO -- A priest was killed Sunday morning in a one-vehicle rollover in Atascosa County.
The Rev. Philip Chung-Jin Kim, 76, died when he lost control of his 2000 Toyota 4Runner on I-37 south of Pleasanton at around 11 a.m., said Department of Public Safety Trooper Wesley Cooper. Kim's vehicle rolled several times and he was ejected from the vehicle. He died at the scene.
Cooper said he didn't know what caused Kim to lose control or if he was wearing a seat belt.
Kim was on his way back from a fishing trip from Port Aransas, where he had spent the Thanksgiving weekend with family.
Kim helped found the city's only Korean Catholic church in Leon Springs. He was a deacon at the church, and when his wife died in 1999, he went to the seminary and was ordained a priest in 2004.
He spent the past four years as an associate pastor at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Selma.
"We are deeply saddened and stunned by the sudden loss of Father Philip Kim," San Antonio Archbishop Jose H. Gomez said in a statement. "He was a gentle man and a faithful priest who truly loved the God who called him and the communities he served."
Funeral arrangements for Kim were pending.
