SAN ANTONIO -- When Sandra Haggray was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 1995, her angelic voice was silenced.
Haggray's focus wasn't on her singing career anymore; it was on staying alive.
"My main goal was to live to see my daughter grow up," she said.
Her lungs failing, Haggray was placed on an organ transplant list. After months of waiting, the music teacher got the phone call in June 2007 that she thought might never come.
"All I could say was, 'Are you kidding?'" she said. "And he said, 'No ma'am, I'm serious.'"
After undergoing a double-lung transplant at the University Transplant Center and months of recovery and practice, Haggray once again found her voice.
On Tuesday night, her angelic voice was heard by hundreds of fellow transplant recipients during a performance at the University Transplant Center.
Haggray said that she is thankful for the lungs she received from an 18-year-old man whose mother made the decision to donate his organs.
"I still mourn because they lost someone they loved dearly," Haggray said. "But I do want to let them know that the decision they made has really helped me and I am so grateful for it. And almost every morning I wake up and I hug myself and I thank God for my lungs and I thank them for my lungs."
Thankful for her second chance, Haggray hopes to the return to the classroom and share her talent with young students.
"I need a job if anyone has one," she said.
