Coyote Sightings Increase In Alamo Heights

POSTED: Tuesday, December 9, 2008
UPDATED: 10:43 pm CST December 9, 2008

Residents in Alamo Heights have reported multiple coyote sightings in recent weeks and have some concern for the safety of their children and pets.

One man said he found his cat had been killed by a likely coyote attack.

"He was in two pieces. I was horrified," said Bill Schiller. "Once they get the taste of domestic cats, they're not going away. They're going to stay here until something is done."

The sightings have happened in neighborhoods near Salado Creek and the Olmos Basin during the overnight and early morning hours, residents said.

One resident said that since the coyotes were here first, he can learn to live with them.

"They're not vicious," Larry Jordan said. "They're not bad, (they're) just one of God's creatures."

While San Antonio's Animal Care Services doesn't deal with wildlife, Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation in Kendalia, Texas, suggests it'd be easier to learn to coexist with coyotes. Some additional suggestions the group makes is to keep garbage away from wildlife, install motion lights, keep pets inside and place a fence around property.
