UPDATED: 5:26 pm CST December 16, 2008

Texas Gov. Rick Perry approved a request Tuesday by Bexar County officials to extend its disaster declaration banning fireworks sales and use.

The ban, originally set for the first 60 hours of fireworks sales, has now been extended from Dec. 20 to Jan. 5, according to Perry's letter to Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff.

Violators will face a fine of $1,000 or possible jail time once the ban goes into effect.
