SAN ANTONIO -- Having a hard time finding the shingles vaccine?
Apparently, you're not alone.
A KSAT viewer from Boerne contacted KSAT 12 News by e-mail concerned that there was a shingles vaccine shortage because he could not get his prescription filled.
The e-mail said, "We have been trying to get the shot to no avail. It's on back order and they don't know when it will become available."
Dr. Fernando Guerra, director of the San Antonio Metro Health District, said that the only company that produces the vaccine, called Zoster, is having trouble keeping up with increasing demand.
"Because production is somewhat delayed, catching up and filling orders have been pending," Guerra said.
Guerra said there are more than 80 doses of the vaccine available at two health clinics and more should be available later this month.
People over the age of 60 should receive the shingles vaccine, Guerra said.
Shingles is a virus that begins with a painful rash and can causes chicken pox. It also affects the nerves and can be very painful for weeks.
