Officer Daniel Vegas Shot While Responding To Traffic Accident

SAN ANTONIO -- A 12-year veteran of the San Antonio Police Department shot and wounded a man who shot the officer seconds earlier.
According to a San Antonio Police Department news release, Officer Daniel Vegas was dispatched to a call for a one-vehicle crash at the intersection of
NW 34th Street and Elson Avenue at around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.
When Vega arrived at the scene, the driver tried to run, but the officer grabbed him by the arm, the news release said.
Moments later, the man reached into his waistband and pulled out a semiautomatic handgun and shot Vega, wounding him once in the leg, the news release said.
Vega then drew his service weapon and fired multiple times, wounding the man once in the arm and leg, the news release said.
Vegas and the man were transported to University Hospital. Vegas, who was later released, will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
The man is expected to be charged with attempted capital murder, the news release said.
