SAN ANTONIO -- A large water fountain that was installed in Olmos Park to reduce traffic accidents seems to have become a magnet of sorts for some drivers.
Since the 12-foot Spanish-style water fountain has stood in the middle of a traffic circle on McCullough Avenue in October, it has been hit by vehicles six times.
Except for an 85-year-old man talking on his cell phone, the rest of the drivers whose vehicles have plowed into the fountain have been drunk, said Olmos Park City Councilman Sean McNelis.
"We've had a couple incidents where people have essentially abandoned their vehicles and fled," McNelis said.
McNelis said that while it may be hard to keep drunken drivers from hitting the fountain, the city has taken steps to make it more visible for sober drivers, including increased signage, street markings and plenty of lighting.
"People who are so inebriated that they don't recognize that there's this type of an object in the road, this type of a change in a traffic condition, shouldn't be on the road," McNelis said.
The councilman added that despite the handful of incidents involving drunken drivers, the fountain has decreased the number of traffic accidents in the roundabout.
Prior to the fountain being installed, drivers routinely plowed through the traffic circle because it was harder to see.
