CARRIZO SPRINGS, Texas -- A 26-year-old man has been brought to a San Antonio hospital after being shot by a Border Patrol agent in Dimmit County.
The shooting happened about 9:30 a.m., Monday in a Carrizo Springs neighborhood as an agent performed a traffic stop, investigators said. The unidentified man, who was recently released from prison and had outstanding warrants, tried to drive away and nearly struck one of the Border Patrol agents, said Randy Clark, the Border Patrol agent in charge in Carrizo Springs.
One of the agents fired twice into the vehicle, striking the man in the shoulder, Clark said. The man drove himself to a nearby hospital and was later transported by University Hospital in San Antonio in unknown condition, Clark said. A woman and child riding in the vehicle were not injured.
Carrizo Springs is located about 115 miles to the southwest of San Antonio.
Clark would not say why the vehicle was stopped, but that the agents involved were tracking a group of suspected undocumented immigrants in the area. The Texas Rangers and FBI officials are assisting in the investigation. Clark said the agent who fired the shots is a 6-year veteran of the Border Patrol.
