BLANCO, Texas -- Two teenage volunteer firefighters have been arrested and charged with draining the Blanco city water supply.
Dustin Garrett, 19, and Stephen Howells, 18, are charged with felony criminal mischief for opening up two fire hydrants and draining about 400,000 gallons of water from the city's supply, police said. Garrett had been fired by the department earlier in the week, police said.
Blanco usually holds just under 1,000,000 gallons of water in storage. The release from the hydrants cut the city's water storage in half, according to the Blanco Public Works Department, which stated it took more than two days to bring the amount of stored water back to normal.
Now the city is left with the costs associated with the act of vandalism. Public works workers earned overtime bringing the water supply back to normal and the release of water damaged city streets. Not only does the city have to pay to repair the roads, the city may face penalties from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality because the city had to draw more water from the Blanco River, exceeding its monthly allotment. Blanco officials said that as of Thursday morning, there was no word from the TCEQ on whether the city would face fines.
The loss of water prompted Blanco's fire marshal to ban the use of fireworks over Independence Day weekend. Both men were arrested, but Howells has since been released on bond. Garrett remains jailed in lieu of $100,000 bond.
