SAN ANTONIO -

Two men who allegedly ran away from Balcones Heights police are in custody after being caught in San Antonio. A third man reportedly managed to avoid being captured.

Sgt. John Jahanara with the Balcones Heights police said officers had tried to initiate a traffic stop around 5 a.m. Tuesday on West Avenue near Interstate 10.

However, three people who were inside the vehicle got out and ran away.

Jahanara said as the suspects approached the San Antonio city limits, his agency called for assistance from SAPD.

Through the use of a helicopter and canine unit, officers tracked down two of the men in a neighborhood about a half mile away—near Fresno Avenue and I-10.

“Without the help of SAPD, we couldn’t have apprehended these suspects,” Jahanara said.

A third man who had been in the vehicle was not located during the search.

Jahanara said officers soon discovered the men had done more than break a few traffic laws.

“There were drugs located inside the vehicle,” he said. “They had marijuana.”

Although investigators had not had a chance to weigh the load, Jahanara said the stash of marijuana was enough to be used for street sales.

He said San Antonio police are also looking into whether the suspects may be linked to a series of burglaries in the area overnight.

Both men in custody are from Brownsville, Texas, Jahanara said.
