Two women died early Friday morning after their SUV plunged off the Interstate 10 access road and landed upside down on the Wurzbach exit ramp.

According to San Antonio police, the driver was in a Chevy Trailblazer headed east on the I-10 access road between Huebner and Wurzbach.

Police said the driver was in the turnaround lane, but kept going straight at a high rate of speed.

She slammed into a concrete wall, went airborne off the bridge and landed upside down on the eastbound off ramp for Wurzbach Road. Police said the driver and her passenger, both in their early 20s, were trapped inside.

"The fire department was here first. They reported to us that neither was wearing a seat belt. They were both trapped inside by the metal. They were cut out by the fire department," said Sgt. Scott Foulke with the San Antonio Police Department.

The passenger died at the scene. The driver went to University Hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead a short time later. Their names have not been released.

Traffic was delayed while officials cleared the scene, but was reopen at 5:30 a.m.

TxDOT officials said they have to inspect the railing on the access road above because it was damaged.
