Two people who stole a car with two young children in it from outside a North Side day care center are the subjects of a search by San Antonio police Monday.
Police are looking for a thin man in his 20s with thick eyebrows, a goatee or beard and a possible gold tooth in the front of his mouth. He was last seen wearing a gray T-shirt with a grey hoodie on top. Police were also on the lookout for a blond woman, who was also wearing a grey hoodie with black tights.
According to Sgt. Javier Salazar of the San Antonio Police Department, the pair jumped into a woman's car outside the Luv N Care Child Development Center in the 16000 block of Henderson Pass at 8:30 a.m. and drove off with a 8 month-old and 2 year-old boy still inside the vehicle.
The mother told KSAT 12 News that the man had asked if he could use the restroom at the day care center. It was as he was leaving, she said, that he bumped her as she was going to get her child out of the back seat. She said by the time she got to the door, he was in the front seat and starting taking off.
While police did not find them right away, they did quickly locate the stolen car at an apartment complex nearby.
"We saturated the area," Salazar said. "We had plain-clothes detectives out here, as well, and thankfully, we had a very good description of the suspects."
A neighbor at another complex about a block away later spotted the children.
"They dropped them off, either left them on the sidewalk here at this apartment complex, or left them with somebody. We are thankful that they did that," Salazar said. "The kids are safe and sound. That's what was first and foremost in everybody's mind out here."
The children were quickly reunited with their mother. Salazar said the children didn't seem to realize what was happening.
Police said it's not clear whether the couple were out to steal just the car or if the children may have been their intended target.
Either way, police said, it was apparent that the couple had a change of mind.
They ask anyone with information about the pair to call the San Antonio Police Department at 210-207-7273.
