SAN ANTONIO -

Once seen as a fire victim, a 42-year-old woman is now accused of torching her own home in northeast Bexar County.

Elizabeth Short was arrested Friday, along with her roommate, Karen Remeikis, 58.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Remeikis admitted to Bexar County Fire Marshal's Office investigators that Short told her about plans to burn down the home in order to get money.

Short was charged with two counts of arson and Remeikis was charged with conspiracy.

The affidavit stated the fire that destroyed the home in the 6400 block of Crestway Drive on Dec. 19 was the second time firefighters had put out a fire at the residence.

A fire on Nov. 6 caused damage to only one room of the home, the affidavit stated.

In both incidents, the two women, along with Remeikis' 92-year-old mother, were at the home when the fire started but escaped injury, the affidavit stated.

"I just remember the people being in the driveway across the street and talking about their cats being missing," said Alice Paulson, a neighbor. "I couldn't imagine what it would be like having gone through that."

Paulson said she initially felt sympathy for the women. Now, Paulson is stunned by their arrests.

Della Stalbird, a neighbor, said what the pair are accused of doing makes no sense to her.

"You can't set a fire because (investigators) are going to a find out, you know, how the fire started," Stalbird said.

Stalbird's home also sustained damage from the fire, which she said put her husband and dogs in danger.

The suspects themselves lost several cats in the fire.

The affidavit stated that prior to the first fire in November, Short and Remeikis had entered into a deal to sell the home to a man.

The document stated the women had accepted the man's check as payment for the home, but failed to vacate the property as scheduled and then cut off communication with him.

Remeikis told investigators that Short later decided to burn down the home instead of selling it, the affidavit stated.
