SAPD Supports Bank Dress Code

Chief Bill McManus Says He Supports Ban On Sunglasses, Hats, Hooded Sweatshirts

A plan by banks in other cities is receiving positive feedback from San Antonio Police Chief Bill McManus.

The proposal, a so-called dress code for bank customers, has already been started in some cities in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

The proposal has been discussed during monthly meetings between law enforcement agencies from San Antonio to Austin, McManus said, and those agencies meet once a month to share information, particularly about robberies, which are common along the I-35 corridor.

Since most bank robbers tend to disguise themselves, the ban on hats, hooded sweatshirts and sunglasses would likely be a deterrent and would also alert bank security as soon as a robber walked into a bank, McManus said. The ban would be something that banks would have to post signs about and enforce themselves, something the chief said he hopes all banks would consider doing.

"From a law enforcement perspective, we would like to see this happen across the board, because we believe it would reduce bank robberies in the city," McManus said.

McManus admitted that some banks may be hesitant to impose a dress code for fear of inconveniencing their customers, but said that so far, at least one major bank is on board with the idea.
