TxDOT Plans Fix For Wurzbach Parkway

Sonia Watts suffered serious injuries when she was struck head-on by another car that jumped the unprotected median on Wurzbach Parkway this past Saturday.

Watts said the accident happened so fast she didn't have time to react.

"It jumped over the thing, it was in mid-air, when it came down it collided and hit us like that," Watts said.

The violent collision claimed the life of the man who hit Watts. He was identified by police as 30-year-old Barrett McDonald. Sadly, it's not the first time a fatality accident has occurred on the curvy stretch of road. This past June, another driver was killed when her car jumped the curb that separates traffic. Last November, three people were killed in a two-car accident.

According to San Antonio police crash statistics, this year there have been 56 minor accidents and 28 major accidents on the parkway. Adding up all those accidents, the Texas Department of Transportation has realized they need to do something to make Wurzbach Parkway safer. The problem is they don't any cash to do anything right now.

"We have been awarded funding, unfortunately that's funding that won't be available to us until next year," said TxDOT spokeswoman Laura Lopez.

TxDOT is scheduled to install concrete barriers on the parkway next fall but the agency is now trying to move the start date up to next summer. In the mean time they are working on a temporary fix.

"Because of the accidents that have been happening, we are looking at placing temporary barriers until we are actually able to place the permanent concrete barriers," Lopez said.

TxDOT is also working with the city to do a study on the speed limit to see if needs to be dropped below 60 miles per hour. Until improvements are made, Sonia Watts plans to avoid the stretch.

"I will take other routes because it really isn't safe," she said.
