City Eyes Protection For Endangered Species

POSTED: Tuesday, August 4, 2009
UPDATED: 10:20 am CDT August 4, 2009

New rules being considered by the city of San Antonio would make developers disclose how construction would impact nature.

The idea centers on development at Camp Bullis and endangered species.

Development around the U.S. Army post is booming, and there are fears that Camp Bullis and city natural areas could soon become islands of refuge for endangered species, like the golden-cheeked warbler that resides at the post.

"Camp Bullis was concerned that by clearing trees ... habitat was being removed, and that was putting more pressure on the base to protect more habitat on the Camp Bullis property," said Rod Sanchez, director of planning and development services for the city of San Antonio.

If the idea becomes an ordinance, developers would have to file a habitat compliance affidavit, an indication the developer is complying with the federal Endangered Species Act.

If the City Planning Commission backs the proposal, the City Council could vote on the idea as early as Aug. 20.
