Body Identification Ends Agonizing Wait For Kiehls

U.S. Army Spc. James Kiehl, a Comfort native who was killed in the war in Iraq, will be buried with military honors at the Center Point Cemetery.

"Our son is coming home," Randy Kiehl, the soldier's father, said during an interview with KSAT 12 News. "Not the way we wanted it. But he is coming home to be in Texas."

The Schaetter Funeral Home in Comfort will handle the arrangements and a memorial service will be held at Comfort Baptist Church. The date and time won't be set until the military releases Kiehl's body.

Spc. Kiehl's remains were identified by military officials Friday as among seven dead soldiers found during the rescue of Pfc. Jessica Lynch at an Iraqi hospital last week. The soldiers, based out of Fort Bliss in El Paso, were ambushed on March 23.

Since then, the wait has been an agonizing one for the soldier's parents.

"The news of his death really hit home," Randy Kiehl said. "The world's virtually stopped (since) Friday evening. We'll go back to some semblance of normalicy, but it'll never be the same. I won't have my son to talk to."

Spc. Kiehl leaves behind a wife, who is eight months pregnant with their first child.
