Comfort Gives Final Goodbyes To War Hero

Spc. James Kiehl Dies In Iraq War

POSTED: 1:35 p.m. CDT April 14, 2003

Mourners packed the Comfort Baptist Church on Monday for a memorial service for a soldier who was among the first casualties in the war in Iraq.

The church holds 225 people, but church officials prepared for dozens more mourners who planned to pay their final respects for Army Spc. James Kiehl (pictured, left).

The 22-year-old computer repairman with the Fort Bliss-based 507th Maintenance Company was reportedly helping fix a broken truck near Nasiriyah when his unit was attacked by Iraqi forces on March 23.

Kiehl's body along with eight others were found 12 days later in graves when an American POW was rescued from a hospital in Iraq.

A military honor guard, along with the soldier's parents and his wife, who is due with their first child in a matter of days, accompanied Kiehl's flag-drapped coffin to the church.

A procession will make its way to Centerpoint Cemetery for a graveside ceremony with full military honors.

Kiehl's body will later be cremated.
