SAN ANTONIO -- Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents spent the last six months rounding up 1,785 known gang members from 89 different cities around the nation, including 47 from South Texas, say federal officials.
The initiative, called Operation Community Shield, targeted gang members and their associates.
Vincent Iglio of ICE said, "30 to 50 percent of these gang members have very violent criminal histories. Murders, rapes, burglaries involving violence, so when we take these people out of the community we have a great impact on the local community."
Of the nearly 2,000 suspected gang members arrested, more than half were arrested on criminal charges ranging from attempted murder to drug and firearms violations.
Twelve of the suspected gang members were from San Antonio and six of those are undocumented immigrants who will likely be deported, Iglio said.
ICE has a gang activity tip line for anyone who may have information. That toll free number is 866-347-2423.
