SAN ANTONIO -- In the corner of a towing yard, next to the cemetery in Pleasanton, was Lucia Sanchez’s black Taurus, crushed beyond recognition by the weight and impact of a white pick-up truck that landed on top of it before rolling off upside down.
The mother of three of San Antonio died instantly in the crash sometime after 11 p.m. Saturday in the small town of Christine in Atascosa County. Charges are pending against the 48-year-old driver of the pickup, Oscar Resendez also of San Antonio.
DPS Trooper James Kellert said Sanchez fled the bar where she worked at a high rate of speed down a two-lane road, in an effort to flee Resendez during a brief chase. He also said DPS is investigating reports the two earlier had been arguing.
Her uncle Jose Luis Gonzalez said in Spanish that Resendez had been asking her to divorce her husband and marry him.
Her husband Juan also said in Spanish a thorough investigation will reveal what led to the chase and the fatal crash.
Trooper Kellert said whether Resendez was drunk and whether the crash was intentional will “possibly and likely” determine what charges he will face.
