A head-on collision in Bandera County on Tuesday left two people dead and two others injured.

The Department of Public Safety said 54-year-old Joe Salinas was traveling westbound on Highway 46 near Pipe Creek when his vehicle crossed into the oncoming lanes and hit a pickup truck driven by 61-year-old David Sharrock.

Both Salinas and Sharrock were killed in the accident, DPS officials said.

Sharrock's 82-year-old mother, a passenger in the pickup truck, was airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio with non-life threatening injuries.

The head-on accident also caused a chain reaction crash involving two other vehicles. The driver of one of the vehicles was taken to a hospital in Boerne with minor injuries. A couple and two children in the other car were not hurt.

DPS investigators are looking into the possibility that Salinas fell asleep behind the wheel.
