Orlando Martinez Hit, Killed By Train

Armando Martinez woke Sunday morning to a frantic phone call. The caller told him his younger brother had been killed in a freak accident.

"He said, 'Orlando had been hit by a train,'" said Martinez.

According to the police report, 46-year-old Orlando Martinez was walking in the 400 block of Probandt Road when he walked into the path of a train.

The engineer told investigators he saw one of the arms of the crossing gate move up, then noticed a dark figure.

He said he thought Orlando Martinez was attempting to outrun the train, but Orlando's brother said he can't imagine why he would do that.

The Martinez family has lived two blocks away from that railroad crossing their entire lives and often walked nearby.

"He was very familiar with the tracks," said Martinez.

Sunday afternoon, Orlando's 11 brothers and sisters gathered at their parents home to remember their brother.

"He was out here passing candy with one of my brothers and he said he was going out, and that was the last we heard of him," said Martinez.

Orlando's sister, Veronica, said her brother was getting his life together and even started going back to church.

"He loved the choir and was going to join the choir. He was very thrilled to be going to church," said Veronica Martinez.
