SAN ANTONIO -- There is a new scam going around that involves two of the most popular sites on the Internet.
A San Antonio woman lost more than $6,000 in a transaction she thought was safe.
Valerie Cadena wanted to buy a 2006 Lexus IS 350 for sale on Craigslist for $6,600.
"I was looking for a car and it looked so nice," Cadena said. "And I thought, 'If I don't do it right now I'll regret it.'"
Cadena e-mailed listed owner Bryan Boulter, who told her it had 46,000 miles, a clean title and was in his garage in Columbia, Ky. Boulter also wanted to close the deal through
eBay Motors, a legitimate Web site.
"I was thinking, 'I'm going to get my car,'" Cadena said.
The invoice instructed Cadena that payment must be sent by bank wire transfer to a Wells Fargo branch in California.
"The invoice said I had to send money to a woman, Veronica Martinez, to Hesperia, California," Cadena said.
But Cadena found out that the transaction was not through eBay Motors after she wired and lost $6,800.
Dean Taylor, executive director of the San Antonio Better Business Bureau said she had not heard of this scam before.
"Just looking at the e-mails that she received, yes it would definitely look like she was dealing with someone from eBay," Taylor said.
Taylor said that like most Internet scams, the dead giveaway was that the money was supposed to be wired.
eBay has warned customers of an increase in fake eBay Motors transactions and warn consumers to never pay with MoneyGram or Western Union.
"That's just not a really safe way to purchase anything online," Taylor said.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office in California said that the case has been submitted to the district attorney's office for review and filing. No one has been arrested.
Sheriff's officials also said there may be more online victims other than Cadena.
"I want them to go to jail or do something," said Cadena, who hopes to get her money back.
