Autistic Child Runs Away From School

Boy Runs Into Street; Driver Jumps Out Of Car To Stop Traffic

What happens to your child when not in your care could be your worst nightmare.

A San Antonio boy fled his day school, One For Autism, making it all the way to Huebner Road, literally stopping traffic.

"We just saw a little boy running in the middle of the street and you know we both freaked out," said passerby Senada Causevic.

She and her friend, Sandra Martinez, jumped out of their car and sprang into action.

"I was trying to stop the traffic because cars were coming pretty fast," Martinez said.

She was hoping to slow the cars long enough for her friend to get the boy out of harm's way.

Causevic described the 4-year-old boy as frightened, explaining he dropped to the ground as she approached to pick him up.

Olga Vasquez-Silva, director of One For Autism, did not see the incident, but explained that a therapist was just a few steps behind the student, as he maneuvered his way through three doors before making it to the parking lot.

"Every door he went through had either a child safety knob or some type of alarm," Vasquez-Silva said.

She also explained that elopement, or running away, is a characteristic of kids who have autism.

The school already had protective measures in place, but has since added more precautions, including an extra door knob out of the childrens' reach.

The school is also putting in a request with the city to get signs similar to school zone signs installed that will prompt drivers to slow down.
