Family Remembers Relative Murdered 12 Years Ago

POSTED: Sunday, November 8, 2009

Colorful pieces of glass from wine bottles, placed in the form of the Virgin de Guadalupe glistened in the candlelight in a small red room Saturday night at the Weeping Woman's Gallery in the Blue Star Art Complex.

The work of art made up one part of an alter was built by Anthony N. Quintanilla in honor of his brother Joseph who was murdered February 23, 1997.

Joseph Quintanilla was a horse jockey. His body was found near down the road from the Mendiola Downs Race Track shortly after he competed in a race.

"It's for my brother and my family," said Anthony Quintanilla.

The alter, which took Quintanilla two months to build, was finished just in time for Dia de Los Muertos.

Quintanilla and his family said it's a sad reminder that the man who killed Joseph has never been caught.

Joseph's daughter Janet Quintanilla said while the alter brings them peace and pride, only the arrest of the man who killed her father would bring her closure.

The alter will be on display at the Weeping Woman's Gallery at Blue Star Sunday, Nov. 8th from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m.
