SAN ANTONIO -- A 15-year veteran of the San Antonio Police Department shot and killed a man during a domestic disturbance Friday on the city's North Side.
According to a news release, when Officer Keith Whitehead arrived at a home in the 14800 block of Bluemist Pass at 11 a.m., a man was outside the home. The man told Whitehead that he had gotten into an argument with his brother, who was inside the home.
Whitehead then entered the home, where he encountered a man who was wielding a meat cleaver, the news release said.
The officer then ordered the man, Loc Quang Ta, 48, to drop the weapon, the news release said.
The suspect then threw the meat cleaver at Whitehead who at the same time opened fire on the man, striking him multiple times, the news release said.
Loc Quang Ta was transported to University Hospital, where he died.
Whitehead suffered a substantial laceration to the side of his face and was transported to a hospital, the news release said.
Whitehead will be placed on administrative duty pending an investigation, which is common procedure in officer-involved shootings.
