SAN ANTONIO -- With the help of two undercover women officers posing as prostitutes, police watched and waited for alleged johns in the 4800 block of West Commerce Monday. In just a couple hours, police said five men were arrested.
Most had nothing to say to KSAT 12 News after they were handcuffed. One man, however, said he was only offering a woman a ride.
"I don't understand why all this is going on," he said.
SAPD's West Patrol first started this project a few months ago. It's called "Calles Seguros," which translates to safe streets.
"What we did we decided to put officers out there undercover to catch some of the prostitutes related to some of the robberies out here," said Capt. John Saucedo, West Patrol Commander.
Police say prostitution tears at the fabric of a community, so they want to stop it.
"Victimless crime leads to other crimes including drugs, including gambling and of course prostitution. They also contribute to social decay and the deterioration of the neighborhood," said Saucedo.
So far, three stings have been successful and police say more are to follow.
"We want people to get the message that if you are going to be coming out here to try to pick up a prostitute or commit any other crime in this area, you will go to jail," said Saucedo.
Police say some business owners have recently complained about the prostitution problem in the area.
